I took the attorney's exam. General study tips can be found here: http://barexamtoolbox.com/bar-exam-lessons-learned-and-free-california-outlines/

In brief, though, use the extra time to practice essays and the performance test, though MBE exercises can also provide a nice review and a bit of diversity, so sprinkle them in every now and then.

Thanks for the outlines. I took the Bar over the summer and I found your outlines very helpful. They are clean and they address the Barbri material very well. I probably put 100 hours into memorizing your outlines and it paid off on November 22nd when I got results. Thanks for all the help. Hi, thank you so much for doing this. I'm a NY attorney who recently moved to CA. I plan on taking the attorneys' exam July 2014--would you recommend taking a course? I've studied for and passed the NY bar on my own, but CA bar seems like a different animal. I have a slightly older set of CA BARBRI books that I purchased online. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks!

Reply
Adam Shajnfeld
5/22/2014 06:45:16 am

Jan, I do recommend a course. For me, it was a great way to get up-to-date materials, a disciplined study schedule, lectures that boiled things down to essentials, and books with plenty of practice questions. It is critical to do practice questions, and to have a sense of the kind of answers and formatting that the graders look for. Writing as an experienced attorney would is not necessarily going to be what the graders want, as most test-takers are not yet attorneys. I spent my mornings listening and outlining the lectures, and split the afternoons between reviewing the outlines and doing practice questions. Of course, there are disciplined people who do pass the exam through self-study, but I tend to be very cautious!

Thanks again for the outlines. I have looked at many, some as old as 4 years, and it all seems to be the same information. Do you know if any of this fundamentally changed in the past 4 years? I really haven't seen anything major. I'm debating on whether I need to get newer materials for July 2014.

Erick, I can’t say definitively, because I haven’t done any comparison. However, given my recollection from taking the NY bar years before, little has changed in some subjects. Torts, contracts, trusts and estates, and criminal law come immediately to mind. Of course, there are some new developments in constitutional law (they usually make the news), and I’m sure some changes in other areas. I think you are likely safe with something only a few years old, but again, I can’t be certain.

Adam - great outlines and thank you for sharing. I notice you do not have an outline posted for California Civil Procedure (unless I am missing it). In comparing your Civ Pro outline against the barbri lecture handout, your outline ends just as the barbri lecture handout goes into the CA specifics. Was there a reason for this? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Robert, thanks for the note. I did do an outline, but it was of pretty bad quality. I didn't have the time I wanted to devote to it, so it was full of holes and not very user-friendly. I ended up doing the following: memorized the federal material, and what I thought were the top 4 or so testable distinctions. I figured the chance that CA Civ Pro appears was low, and the chance that it went outside those 4 was even lower. I ended up just putting those 4 areas onto flashcards. From memory, one was probably personal or subject matter jurisdiction, and another was class actions, but I don't remember the others now.

Adam,

I wanted to thank you for the bar exam outlines you posted on your web site. I used them for my bar prep and passed the first time. Considering I am 52 years old, went to a non ABA school and I have the memory of a goldfish that is saying something.

I incorporated your outlines in a computer program I wrote to help me learn the bar material. I need to know if I can distribute your outline material with my program.

There is a lot of interest among my fellow law school students down here in Monterey in my program. I would be happy to demonstrate the program to you under a beta license. Even after beta I plan on distributing the program for free. It is multi-dimensional, multi-media outlining program designed using the latest research in developing and accessing plastic recall memory.

Thanks,

Thanks Adam. Well done.

This is the simplest question you will ever get. But with all the brilliant minds in the world I cannot find the answer to this question.

To get into federal court do you need personal jurisdiction AND subject matter jurisdiction?

What if you only have personal jurisdiction or only have subject matter jurisdiction ?

In order to satisfy subject matter jurisdiction do you need diversity AND federal question?

Adam,

I would like to thank you once again. This is really nice of you. Because of you I will absolutely pay it forward.

I've been taking the early bird Bar Bri and doing all the MBE outlines now. It's nice to have yours as a reference. I find doing my own, even though yours is often saying the exact same thing, drills it in. But I may actually use yours when it comes down to it. Mine tend to be too long.

I'm taking the Feb. 2016 CA bar. FYI - I've been out of law school for 20 years and never practiced. I work in the talent agency world in L.A. So I'm really starting fresh.

If you or anyone on here has advice, something you found or find helpful, please reach out.

My email is: [email protected]

I assume you, Adam, passed the CA bar in 2013? You mentioned not doing a CA Civ Pro outline. I thought they didn't have CA Civ Pro back then?

Anyway, if you all see my question above re Civ Pro it's really pissing me off. The answer I need will put it all together for me. Everyone's outline lists the same thing but they never say AND, OR, regarding my question.

Michael

Quick question- a number of the outlines track Barbri's CMR pretty closely, but omit large sections of material. Was that material not covered on the exam? Or, having already gained familiarity with the concepts, were those subjects that you chose not to include on your hardsheets? (ie the "general rules of contract construction")

Hey Jon. It's hard for me to remember now, but if I left large pieces out, it's likely because these weren't covered by the lecturers (though it's possible I left some stuff out that I knew already). I had been practicing for a few years at that point, and probably had forgotten basic things already, so I think I would have included them unless the lectures I did didn't cover them. Hope that helps.

As I read this, I also find myself looking back into my "life plans" and I remember wanting to add my rule statements / attack likes to our office ASP office; however, before I could even bring more from my locker, I noticed that all my stuff was scattered through, and the "gunners" had taken all my material lol. Sadly, that day was very sad, but moving forward( especially after Bar Hell) I thought about either being a tutor or by providing my resources to you both. Let me know if you are interested! Adam, I worked with you at Cleary (maybe crossed paths on a few cases) and was so pleased to find your outlines when I moved with my family from NYC to the Bay and had to take the CA Bar. Most of the material is still current and the outlines are really clear and succinct. Thanks for you continuing contribution to to the legal community, and take good care!

These should provide some insight before paying for a prep course. I am a foreign attorney gearing up to sit the CA Bar. Thanks for the share.

I studied for and passed the CA Bar Exam in 2017 thanks to your outlines. I recently came looking for them again to send to a friend who is studying now. Thanks for sharing these resources with the public.

Hi Adam,

I am just so glad to find your outlines. It reinforces my belief that there are good people out there. You are one of those who have broken the vicious cycle of this bar system where it sets you to be person who will open up an expensive program and take money from students who already are struggling to make their ends meet. May God bless you. Lots of prayers and good wishes.
